If you’ve ever been in a class with Michele Venegas, You’ll notice her beaming smile and musical presence. I first met her outside of her classroom, smiling and waving as we passed each other in the hallways of the Blackport Building. I had looked in on her studio during a couple of her Music Together classes to witness smiling families singing and playing. I was amazed to see the intentionality of the musical moments and that every person in the room was engaged in the fun. Leading the group, Michele was guiding the families through her singing and movement.

we set up a meeting to discuss me teaching a class for her. This was quite an opportunity for me to learn a new way to teach music and to learn from joyful and experienced teachers.

The next year was filled with observations and out of town training. Every step of the way, I learned new ways to teach and learn. I was excited to find that Music Together has a thoughtful and intuitive approach to music for both teachers and families.

My first couple of classes brought the joy and anxiety of teaching new material, but with Michele’s guidance, I found processes and methods to make musical moments with students and families. It’s been over 4 years now of making music and learning through the Rhythm Kids program of Music Together. I’ve met and learned from Abby, Sonja, Eric, and Dede, the other gifted teachers of Joyful Sounds Music Studios.

The events of this year forced us all to evaluate and adapt. The Rhythm Kids community of teachers have embraced the new tools and ways of teaching that remote learning entail. We’ve discovered together how to persist with the musical concepts and even how to use technology to enhance engagement with our students.

If you feel like your child would benefit from a fun and musical group class either socially distanced and out side or via online learning, email me or visit kidsmusicgrandrapids.com.

My next class starts in 2 weeks and I would love to see you there.
